Personalize MSN TV

It's all about you!
Give your MSN TV a personal touch

By Erfert Fenton

If you're like most people, you add personal touches to your home and office to suit the way you work and play. The radio's tuned to your favorite station; your stationery displays your letterhead; perhaps your reading glasses sit next to the newspaper so you can read the fine print in the movie listings. But if you're like most MSN TV Internet Receiver owners, your receiver doesn't reflect your personal preferences — it could belong to anybody. There are lots of ways to personalize your Internet Receiver to make it your own.

Master of your own account
When you set up your receiver and signed up for the MSN TV service, you created an account. Instead of letting family members or roommates sign in to that account, you can create separate accounts for up to five additional users. That way, each user can be in charge of his or her own e-mail, list of favorite Web pages, and so on.

Having your own account is like having your own room, where nobody can mess with your stuff. (Well, OK. Parents can keep an eye on their kids' stuff. If you're setting up an account for a child, you can set restrictions on e-mail, Chat, instant messages, and Web-page viewing and creation.)

Note: Only the person who created the original account can add users.

When you create an account, you're asked to provide a password. To make sure nobody else can sign in to your account, you can change your password at any time.

Tip: To avoid the keyboard-pounding frustration of forgetting your new password, make sure to write it down and store it in a safe place!

What's in a name?
If you write an e-mail message, send an instant message, or post an item in a discussion group, the name you entered when you set up your MSN TV account appears on the message. In many cases, this is your first and last name. In the interest of informality or the pursuit of privacy, you might want to change the name that appears in your messages.

Here's how: Your e-mail address.

Say anything
Maybe you've received e-mail messages that include a personalized "signature" at the end. You, too, can add a signature to your e-mail messages. It can be anything from a business name and phone number to a quotation that reflects your personality. Quotations can range from the philosophical ("Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle." — Philo of Alexandria) to the, um, less philosophical ("Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana." — Groucho Marx). Be creative!

Note: Your signature isn't set in stone. You can change it at any time.

Tired of listening to the clacking of your keyboard while you're using MSN TV? Cheer up! You can listen to a different kind of keyboard — say, a piano playing Bach's Minuet in G — while you use MSN TV features or surf the Web.

When you enable background music, you can listen to the styles you like, from the soothing somnolence of Ambient to the peppy ivory-ticklings of Ragtime. Not keen on Ragtime? That's OK. You can choose just the styles you want to hear. (To fine-tune your music preferences, you can select just the tunes you like within each style.)

Tip: To preview a particular tune, choose a style and then choose the tune you want to play.

To adjust your background music now, choose this link: Adjust background music.

I can see clearly now
OK. Now that we've made your ears happy, let's take care of your eyes. Your mom always told you not to sit too close to the TV, right? But she probably didn't take into account that you'd be reading Web pages on your TV. That print can be pretty small! You can respect mom's wishes by enlarging the text on Web pages displayed on your Internet & Media Player. (Alternatively, you can defy her and make the text smaller.)

Favorites — fast!
After a while, your list of favorite Web pages might get as long as your arm. Fortunately, you can quickly get to up to seven of your very favorite Web pages by pressing your keyboard's F1 - F7 keys.

Here's how: About Favorites keys.

With what you've learned here, you can give your Internet & Media Player the personal touches that say, "This is mine!"
